"I am originally from Sonora, Mexico. Where people often say that the desert meets the sea."
Sonora is located, in the northwest of the country, near Arizona (United States), and is the second largest in Mexico. Although we are known for our desert and overwhelming heat, Sonora is much more than just that, we have mountains, forests, rivers, and natural areas, for the protection of flora and fauna.
“I had the fortune and pleasure of knowing, hiking, and camping in some of the different places of Sonora.”
Sonora has beaches like San Carlos (winner in 2011 according to National Geographic as the best ocean view in the world) and “Isla Tiburon” (which is the largest in the Gulf of California) where the Seris, an indigenous group, used to live and today they are found in the coastal areas of the state.
“My adventures of 2023 are a small living example of the diversity Sonora has to offer.”
In my last year of undergrad, I took my love for nature, the desire to start a physical activity, and my curiosity to explore the statewhere I grew up.
A few of these places are Sierra Huerfana, Bosque de los Cardones, Estero de Santa Rosa, El Rancho del Aribabi, Las Tinajas, El Manantial de la Poza, and beaches such as El Colorado, El Himalaya, and Punta Chueca.
For these reasons, I am convinced thatanyone wishing to visit or explore Mexico should consider including Sonora in their itinerary. Mexico is so much more than the popular Caribbean beaches like Cancun and Playa del Carmen, just as Sonora is much more than just a desert.
Therefore, it is imperative to immerse yourself in the rich culture, gastronomic diversity, and extraordinary natural landscapes that the state of Sonora can offer.
