“Sometimes we focus so much on romantic love that we forget to cherish, nourish, and celebrate all the other ways of love around us.”

I was asked to write about love, and I froze. What can I say about love? How can I speak about a topic that seems detached from my life? I’m referring to romantic love.

Of course, that is where our mind automatically goes when the L O V E word is mentioned, as we have been taught that that is the only way of love worth talking about.

“Love is so much more than romance. Love is a support system that holds you in your lows and celebrates with you in your highs.”

Love is my mother making me a cup of tea while I rant over the same thing over and over again. Love is waking up early on a Sunday morning to watch F1 with my dad.

“I have found, after some examination, that love is all around us, all around me.”

Love is my friend letting me know when I am not doing the right thing. Love is my sister and I celebrate each other’s victories, no matter how big or small they might seem to the rest of the world.

Don’t get me wrong. I am not writing off the relevance and contribution of a romantic partner; at the end of the day, I am a hopeless romantic and very much in search of someone to share life with.

My point is, and I am very guilty of doing this, that sometimes we focus so much on romantic love that we forget to cherish, nourish, and celebrate all the other ways of love around us.

If you ever get asked to write about love, you will probably get stuck at first; it is the normal thing. But breathe in and look around.

And if you are not asked to write about love, look around anyway, appreciate the love you are being given, and challenge yourself to spread more of it around; it doesn’t take too much.

“I bet you will find more inspiration than you think.”
